Control Systems
A control system may be as simple as a keypad on the wall with a few buttons to operate lights, or as complex as a highly programed touch screen or iPad.  In todays world, with so many different technical services in the home, a simple interface / control system is the answer.  An iPad, with in wall dock and charger can be as little as $2,000 plus programming, compared to a standard vendors colour touch screen starting from $4,500 plus programing.  Some crestron and AMX touch screens can be as much as $17,000 plus programing.  So a small amount of time spent consulting with experienced professionals can be well worth the investiment to make sure you get the right answer to your control needs.  In some cases the expensive touch screen is warranted to achieve very complex outcomes, but not often.

Pool pump control is now a normal part of our work.  This can achieve lower running costs because we can have the filtering to operate on a minium cycle when the alarm system is On (no one is home to use the pool) and have the filtering cycle increase when either the "Boost" button is pushed on the touch screen, of if we have sensor control of the area (sensors on the gates, or motion detectors on an indoor pool), that way the pool filtering only uses as much power as required to meet water quality standards.  Also we can remote control the pool heater, so in the holiday home scenario, you can turn on the pool heater on the way to te holiday house, so when you get there it is nice and warm, ready for a swim, now thats what I call a very cool / hot benefit from  home automation.

The future is here now, and it is to install an iPad in wall, with licensed software and to custom write an "app" to control your home perfectly, which is then also a common platform for other tablet / phone devices to control the home.  This control is from both inside the home, and remote from the home.  We can integrate live camera views and gate and door control.

We have even automated a Japanese style Onsen bath, controlling the fill and empty functions.

Blinds, awnings and windows are also another part of the home control system.  By closing blinds at the right time of day in summer, it can have the effect of reducing the solar loading on a space, and save money by blocking the sun.  Also when the alarm system is turned on, if the blinds are closed and the windows are shut, the act of locking up, can be that much simpler.
